Original steel engraving by James Tingle after the sketch by Samuel Thomas (S.T.) Gill (1818-1880) for Victoria Illustrated published Melbourne circa 1857. At 21, Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck on the goldfields but had more success with his character studies of life on the goldfields. He then moved to Victoria to draw and paint colonial life in Australia. Gill engravings are among the finest records of early Australia. He was skilled in portraying the hardships and victories on the goldfields.
This engraving is the full size as published, 20 x 28cm (8 x 11 inches). This engraving was published black & white and has been finely hand-coloured since. The engraving is currently mounted on display.
