Ormond College antique print. Melbourne University affiliated residence.
by Garran, Andrew
Ormond residential college for students attending Melbourne University, Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne Business School and the Australian National Academy of Music.
Named for Francis Ormond who suscribed 3,000 pounds of the initial 10,000 pounds target. Ormond then offered to completely finance construction. He contributed 22,571 of the 38,000 pounds required for the building, Ormond College was opened in 1879. In 1881 there were 20 students. It is now the largest residential college for The University of Melbourne which was established by an act of the Parliament of Victoria in 1853.
Illustrating Australia's development, this original wood engraving was published in Picturesque Atlas of Australasia c.1888 to commemorate 100 years of settlement since the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788.
This engraving has fine later hand-colour and is surrounded by text. It will look even better when framed.
Size of image is 5 x 7 inches or 13 x 18cm.
