by Gill, Samuel Thomas
S.T. Gill Antique Print. One of the best detailed early views of Geelong in colonial Australia.
Original steel engraving by James Tingle after the sketch by Samuel Thomas (S.T.) Gill (1818-1880) for Victoria Illustrated published Melbourne circa 1857. At 21, Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck at the diggings on the gold-fields, but had more success with his character studies of life there. ST Gill then moved to Victoria to pursue his painting and drawing of colonial life in Australia.
While we only show the image detail, the engraving is the full published size of 20 x 28cm (8" x11"). This engraving was published black & white. It has been finely hand-coloured at some time.
