S.T. Gill engraving of the gold mining town of Geelong in Victoria in Australia where ST Gill did many wonderful sketches of life during the gold rush in Australia.

Original steel engraving by James Tingle after the sketch by Samuel Thomas (S.T.) Gill (1818-1880) for Victoria Illustrated published Melbourne circa 1857. At 21, Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck on the gold-fields but had more success with his character studies of life on the goldfields. He then moved to Victoria to pursue his painting and drawing of colonial life in Australia.

While we only show the image detail, the engraving is the full published size of 20 x 28cm (8" x11"). This engraving is black & white as published. There is conservation repair tape on a vertical tear at the top of the page - just intruding over the intaglio impression (antique print priced accordingly).
