Original steel engraving by James Tingle after the sketch by Samuel Thomas (S.T.) Gill (1818-1880) for Victoria Illustrated published Melbourne circa 1857. At 21, Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck on the goldfields but had more success with his character studies of life on the goldfields. He then moved to Victoria to pursue his painting and drawing of colonial life in Australia.

While we only show the image detail, the engraving is the full published size of 20 x 28cm (8" x 11"). This engraving was published black & white and has been finely hand-coloured since.
