Rare antique print of HOBART TOWN, Van Dieman’s Land looking east over Hobart from the old Lime Mine in west Hobart, with sailing ship at anchor. (Van Diemen’s Land is now TASMANIA.) This is a lovely view of Hobart, with fine later hand-colour.

Original fine steel engraving of Hobart, published circa 1850 by J. & F. Tallis of London and Glasgow (with later hand-colour).

John and Frederick Tallis continued in their father’s footsteps as fine publishers. With his brother Frederick, in 1842 John Tallis established the J. & F. Tallis publishing company in Cripplegate. The business moved to Smithfield in 1846 but closed in 1849. Frederick left the company in 1851, and after that date Tallis prints were published by John Tallis & Company.

There is an archival repair to a slight tear at lower left. The repaired area would be masked once framed. Page size is 130 x 215mm (5 1/8 x 8 1/2 inches). Engraving measures 90 x 135mm (approx. 3 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches).
