Original wood engraving published in Germany c1890 after the engraving published around that time by French geographer, writer and anarchist, Jean Jacques Élisée Reclus (1830-1905), for the section on “Australasia” within his mammoth work, La Nouvelle Géographie universelle, la terre et les hommes (Universal Geography), his 19-volume masterwork produced over a period of nearly 20 years, between 1875 and 1894.

This engraving has fine later hand-colour. Page size is approximately 16 x 25cm (6 1/4 x 9 7/8 inches). Engraving size is 12 x 18cm (approximately 4 3/4 x 7 inches).
