Fine original steel engraving by Thomas Heawood from the sketch and oil painting by English artist and explorer, Thomas Baines (1820-1875) for Edwin Carton Booth's Australia Illustrated, published in England by Virtue & Co. circa 1874.

In March 1855 Baines sailed from England for Australia, arriving in January 1856 to join the North Australian Expedition of Augustus Charles Gregory, as official artist and storekeeper. During the expedition, which crossed northern Australia from the Victoria River in the Northern Territory to Gladstone in Queensland, he was placed in charge of an excursion to Timor to collect provisions. On his return to England in 1857, Baines was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

This interesting antique print is in good condition, with wide borders, as published: 205 x 275mm (8 x 10 7/8 inches). Engraving, 125 x 188mm (approx. 5 x 7 3/8 inches)
