Adelaide from the River Torrens. Antique print c1886.

by Schell, Frederick B.

Fine antique print of Adelaide on River Torrens in South Australia. An idyllic scene engraved by A. Irwin from a drawing by F.B. Schell for publication in Picturesque Atlas of Australasia.

When 28 years of age, American topographical artist Frederick B. Schell (1857-1906) was commissioned to come to Australia as Art Director by the Picturesque Atlas Publishing Company which was specifically set up to publish the grand Picturesque Atlas of Australasia between 1886 and 1888 to commemorate 100 years of settlement, since the arrival in 1788 of the First Fleet from Britain. The scenes of towns, country, flora, fauna, industry and lifestyle provide a wonderful record of early colonial life.

This beautiful engraving is half-framed, mounted in antique white conservation mattboard, and cellophaned for protection. The window surrounding the engraving measures 195 x 290 mm (approximately 7.5 x 9.25 inches). External measurement of mount measures 315 x 410 mm (12 x 16 inches).
