Brisbane Town Hall, in Queen Street. Engraving c1886.

by Unknown

Brisbane Town Hall antique print (with horse-drawn vehicles), built in Queen Street in 1865 and demolished in 1837.

In 1882, indecision over the site for a larger building resulted in Australia's first City Hall being built in 1930 - on swampy land already owned by the Council. The area was renamed King George Square.

Original antique print c1886, engraved for Picturesque Atlas of Australasia and published between 1886 and 1888 to commemorate one hundred years since First Fleet arrival and settlement at Port Jackson in 1788.

This small engraving has later hand-colour for enhancement, and is mounted between conservation mat board and covered with cellophane for presentation and protection, ready for framing.
