Brisbane Street, Ipswich Australia, antique print. Australia c1886

by Garran, Andrew

Antique print of Brisbane Street, Ipswich, Queensland, c1886. Ipswich was the initial location proposed for the seat of government for the new colony of Moreton Bay.

Original wood engraving after a sketch by Australian artist Julian Rossi Ashton (1851-1942) for Picturesque Atlas of Australasia published between 1886 and 1888 to commemorate 100 years of settlement, since the First Fleet arrival at Botany Bay in 1788. The illustrations for this publication were some of the finest engravings of the late 19th century. Uncoloured when published, these engravings have traditionally been hand-tinted with watercolour for further enhancement.

The engraving has later hand colour and is mounted between cream conservation archival board, and cellophaned for protection, ready for framing. Size of engraving is approximately 16 x 18cm (6.5 x 7 inches).  External mounted size is 29 x 33cm (11.5 x 13 inches).
