Sydney street elevation. George Street antique print. Fowles c1848

by Fowles, Joseph

Sydney George Street building elevations on both sides - with market sheds and police office shown upside down below the street. The police office tower almost reaches to the lower extremity of the paper.

Original engraving circa 1848 by W. Harris, of the Georgian architecture of the period drawn by Joseph Fowles for his Views of Sydney. Joseph Fowles, was drawing master at many private schools in Sydney, and was known as 'Father of Drawing in the city' after  he published this work. Fowles drew the major streets of sydney and named many of the actual buildings and their occupants at that time, which really brings the period into perspective. The fine later hand-colour also enhances this engraving.

The engraving is almost to the bottom of the page, and there are several small nicks out of the paper along the lower edge. The condition of this engraved page is quite good despite this. Page measures 310 x 270mm.
