Sydney Georgian buildings antique print. York Street etching with four rows of building elevations - both sides of the street, with the lower side shown upside down.
Original etching circa 1848 of Georgian architecture in Sydney, illustrated by Joseph Fowles (1809-1878) for his Sydney in 1848 in which he recorded the buildings in Sydney streets, and named many of the buildings and their occupants. The Sydney Drawing Book by Joseph Fowles was the basis for art instruction in New South Wales government schools from 1869 to the 1880s. He was drawing master at many private schools in Sydney and was referred to as 'Father of Drawing in the city' (of Sydney) in the newspaper obituary following his death. This etching has fine later hand-colour, which certainly enhances the visual effect.
The corner is missing at top right, and there are two tears, and further creasing and damage along the base of the page (hence the lower price, even though they should not show once framed). The buildings are not as high as those in the main streets of Sydney, so the page has wide margins around the engraving.
Page measures 307 x 270mm.
