Early Pitt Street, colonial Sydney by Joseph Fowles c1845

by Fowles, Joseph

19th century Pitt Street buildings elevations antique print.

Original engraving circa 1848 by W. Harris of the Georgian architecture of the period drawn by Joseph Fowles, who was drawing master at many private schools in Sydney. Fowles drew the street and named many of the actual buildings and their occupants at that time. The second side of the street is shown upside down. The buildings are enhanced by fine later hand-colour.

The buildings are predominantly higher than in other streets, they almost reach the lower edge of the page. The lower extremity of the page therefore has several small nicks and tears that have archival repairs/reinforcements. Although a couple of these reach the engraving they are barely perceptible. There is also some soiling on the left of the page.

Page measures 310 x 270mm.
