Fowles. Early Sydney streets: Elizabeth Street engraving c1848

by Fowles, Joseph

Elizabeth Street, with elevations of buildings both sides.

Original engraving circa 1848 by W. Harris of the Georgian architecture of the period drawn by Joseph Fowles, who was drawing master at many private schools in Sydney and known as 'Father of Drawing in the city'. Fowles drew the street and named many of the actual buildings and their occupants at that time. The second side of the street is shown upside down.

The two lines of buildings are well-displayed, centrally on the page, with wide margins around them, so that the edge of the page is in good condition. This engraving is enhanced by fine later hand-colour. The page is in good condition and measures 305 x 270mm.
