by Fowles, Joseph

Government House finest antique print - with Union Jack.

Original copperplate engraving c1848 by W. Harris after a drawing by Joseph Fowles of the grand Sydney Government House built in 1845 on Macquaries Street, adjjacent to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Printed by D. Wall at 76 York Street and published by Joseph Fowles of 5 Harrington Street in Sydney.

Fowles drew the principal streets, important buildings, churches, chapels ets of central Sydney. His most unusual scenes were of the streets, with buildings lining their sides, with many names inscribed on the buildings as well as their occupants at that time. They were finely engraved - and the second side of the street was often shown upside down. They are most unusual and distinctive representations of early Sydney with mainly Georgian-style buildings.

This engraving is enhanced by fine later hand-colour. Page size is 310 x 270mm.
