Fowles Sydney street engraving of York Street c1848.

by Fowles, Joseph

York Street, Sydney buildings in 1848, antique print, with four rows of buildings showing elevations of the properties on both sides of the street, with the lower side shown upside down.

Original engraving by W. Harris circa 1848 of the Georgian architecture of the period drawn by Joseph Fowles, who was drawing master at many private schools in Sydney. Fowles recorded the buildings in the street, and named many of the buildings and their occupants. The engraving has fine later hand-colour, which certainly enhances the visual effect.

There is a slight nick out of the paper at top right, and there are two tears at the base of this engraving (hence the lower price, even though they should not show once framed. The buildings are not as high as those in the main streets of Sydney, so the page has wide margins around the engraving.

Page measures 307 x 270mm.
