Fowles Sydney Macquarie Street and Horbury Terrace etching c1848.
by Fowles, Joseph
Sydney Georgian buildings antique print. Macquarie Street etching with four rows of building elevations on both sides of the street, with the lower side shown upside down.
Original etching circa 1848 of Georgian architecture in Sydney, illustrated by Joseph Fowles (1809-1878) for his Sydney in 1848 in which he recorded the buildings in Sydney streets, and named many of the buildings and their occupants. The Sydney Drawing Book by Joseph Fowles was the basis for art instruction in New South Wales government schools from 1869 to the 1880s. He was drawing master at many private schools in Sydney and was referred to as 'Father of Drawing in the city' (of Sydney) in the newspaper obituary following his death. This etching has fine later hand-colour, which certainly enhances the visual effect.
Page size 213 x 270mm (8 3/8 inches x 10 5/8 inches). There is a tiny nick out of the top right corner of the paper, and a tiny tear into the edge of the page on right at upper line of second street.
