Creswick Creek goldfields S. T. Gill antique print. About 100 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, Creswick was first settled by the Creswick brothers who had a large sheep station in the district in 1842. The town grew following the discovery of gold around the end of 1851.

At 21, Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck at the diggings, but had more success with his character studies of life on the gold-fields. In Victoria ST Gill gained a good reputation for his painting and drawing of colonial life in Australia.
