Victoria STGill Government Camp, Creswick Creek Antique Print c1857

by Gill, Samuel Thomas

S. T. Gill antique print of Creswick Creek goldfields. About 100 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, Creswick was first settled by the Creswick brothers who had a large sheep station in the district in 1842. The town grew following the discovery of gold around the end of 1851.

Original steel engraving by James Tingle after the sketch by Samuel Thomas (S.T.) Gill (1818-1880) for Victoria Illustrated published Melbourne circa 1857 (with fine later hand-colour).

At 21, Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck at the diggings, but had more success with his character studies of life on the gold-fields. In Victoria ST Gill gained a good reputation for his painting and drawing of colonial life in Australia.

We show the image for better detail. Please note that the engraving is full published size: 20 x 28cm (8" x 11"). This image has been hand-tinted with watercolour at some time since publication.
