Dulon and L. Poates after Dawes, was published in Sydney by The Picturesque Atlas Publishing Company between 1886 and 1889 to commemorate 100 years since the First Fleet arrival at Port Jackson and Sydney Cove in 1888.

A competent astronomer (recommended by the Astronomer Royal), William Dawes volunteered for service with the First Fleet to New South Wales, and was appointed marine officer. The Board of Longitude supplied instruments and books for an observatory at Sydney Cove. From March 1788 Dawes was an engineer and surveyor in the colony and began building an observatory on what is now Dawes Point. By early July he was discharged from duties with the flagship of the First Fleet, HMS Sirius. William Dawes constructed batteries on the headlands at the entrance to Sydney Cove, laid out the government farm, and the first streets and allotments in Sydney and Parramatta.
