by Tallis & Company, John

Sir Joseph Banks, Bart. K.B: P.R.S. Ob.1820. Engraved c1853 for Tallis & Company.

Original fine stippled steel engraving by Henry Robinson (fl.1827-1872), from the original of Sir Thomas Lawrence in the British Museum. Published in London circa 1850 by John Tallis & Company, London & New York, for Edmund Lodge's "Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain". Tallis & Company were renowned for the decorative engraved borders they added to their engraved maps and prints. This would be one of the most exquisite engravings done, and also one of the finest hand-coloured engravings.

Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was president of the Royal Society in London. Banks accompanied James Cook on the combined Royal Navy-Royal Society scientific expedition to the south seas. During the navigation and charting of the east coast of Australia, Banks was responsible for collecting and recording many of Australia's unique flora and fauna.

Engraved area of page is 18 x 23cm (approximately 7 x 9 inches).
