Sailing Ship. Clipper Ship "Tayleur" built for London-Australia route. Engraving c1853

by The Illustrated London News

Antique print of The New Iron Clipper-built Ship "Tayleur", for Australia.

Original engraving of a grand clipper sailing ship, for The Illustrated London News published in London circa 1853 (with later hand-tinting with watercolour).

The Illustrated London News periodical was the world's first graphic newspaper. From the beginning, illustrated news was popular, selling hundreds of thousands of copies each edition (in particular with news of any wars around the world). Engraved illustrations were the main attraction. They were avidly collected, and coloured for further enjoyment (as with this engraving).

This hand-coloured engraving is half a page from The Illustrated London News. We have other early maritime vessels. Please enquire. Size of engraving is 155 x 240 mm (6 x 9.5 inches).
