Original wood engraving for publication in The Illustrated London News on February 1, 1862 (with later hand-colour). This engraving of the principals of The Burke and Wills important Australian expedition, was published on the upper half of a page in The Illustrated London News periodical.

The world's first graphic newspaper, The Illustrated London News was set up in 1842. From the time of the introduction of engraved illustrations tot he newspaper, illustrated news became popular with all levels of society, with many thousands of copies printed for each edition. Engraved illustrations of events and discoveries from around the world were avidly collected, and often clipped out and coloured for further enjoyment.

The full page size would have been 410 x 295mm (16 x 11.5 inches). This half page measures 200 x 275mm (7 7/8 x 11 inches). The engraving is mounted between 'antique white' conservation matt board, and covered with cellophane for protection. Window size of matted engraving is 155 x 260mm (6 1/8 x 10 1/4 inches).
