Australian Goldfields antique print. Preaching at the Diggings. Sherer engraving c1853.

by Sherer, John

Antique print of Gold Diggings in Australia c1853. Religious instruction..

"Oh! how he showed the white of his eyes; whilst his auditory seemed variously affected by his air of sanctity, and his strongly-marked style of denouncing sin." - with varying responses from his parishioners.

Hand-coloured original wood engraving by W.A. Nicholls 'from authentic sketches taken in the colony' by S.T. Gill.  published in London circa 1853 for John Sherer’s “The Gold-Finder of Australia - How he went, How he fared, How he made his fortune”. London-based Sherer added amusing descriptive captions below each engraving that was done from ST Gill's sketches for lithographs of the Australian gold-rushes.

Engraved page measures 13 x22 cm (5 x 8.5 inches). A group of these, framed on the wall, would be both an interesting historical statement.
