by Gill, Samuel Thomas

Antique Print of Mounted Police escorting gold to Melbourne.

Original hand-coloured lithograph by Samuel Thomas (S.T.) Gill (1818-1880) from his own sketch for the most important illustrated work on the Victoria Gold Diggings and Gold Diggers in Australia. Original S.T. Gill lithograph c1853 published by Macartney & Galbraith, 30 Collins Street, Melbourne.

Gill’s superb drawings depict life during the Gold Era, making much of the two extremes of those who struck it rich and those who didn’t. At 21, Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck at the diggings, but had more success with his character studies of life on the gold-fields. In Victoria ST Gill gained a good reputation for his painting and drawing of colonial life in Australia.

This lithograph has foxing along the bottom. Just think of it as dust kicked up by the horses.
