The Gwalior Plains. Indigenous Australians smoking beehive. Honey c1874.

by Armytage, J.C.

Australian Aboriginal Honey-Hunting from Bee-hives. Antique print c1874.

Original steel engraving by prominent English landscape artist and engraver James Charles (J.C.)  Armytage (1802-1897) after the drawing by James Howe Carr (also known as Carse), for Edwin Carton Booth's Australia, Illustrated with Drawings by Skinner Prout, Chevalier, Armytage and others, published in England circa 1874 by Virtue & Company.

The engravings for this interesting early history of Australia are some of the finest steel engravings ever done. They are an excellent record of Australia before development and 'sophistication'.

This engraving has a little soiling lower left of image. Page extremities have slight age-soiling as is usual. The margins are wide, as published. Page size: 215 x 270mm (approx 8 1/2 x 10 5/8 inches). Engraved mage size is 130 x 182mm (5 x 7 1/8 inches).
