Original steel engraving drawn and engraved by explorer/artist Thomas Baines (1820-1875) for Australia Illustrated published in London c1874 (with later hand-colour).

An inveterate traveller, Thomas Baines joined Augustus Gregory as his official artist and storekeeper, for his expedition across northern Australia between 1855–1857. The expedition was sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society to evaluate the northern area of Australia for suitability as a colonial settlement. The Baines River was named in recognition of the importance of Thomas Baines.
