Aborigines. Savages of Cape Diemen Preparing their Meal c1800.

by Debrett, John

Antique Print of Aborigines preparing a meal, with visiting Europeans as welcome guests, playing with their children, demonstrating scissors, and 'conversing' with the "savages".

Original copperplate engraving by J. Walker, of the drawing by painter and naval draughtsman, Piron (active 1791-1793), after a sketch by Harding. Published April 20 1800 by J. Debrett Piccadilly, for the Voyage in Search of La Perouse. (Perouse was last seen at Port Jackson in 1788.)

The surface of the soft but thick paper is slightly rubbed, there is a tiny conservation-repaired tear to edge of page upper-mid-right, and there is slight soiling of the page, but it is still a very interesting scene (priced appropriately in recognition of the condition). The page measures 225 x 290mm (approximately 9 x 11.5 inches). Engraved image measures 180 x 242mm (7 x 9.5 inches).
