High quality chromolithograph from a photograph by Rudolf Cronau, published in 1904 for The History of Mankind by Prof. Friedrich Ratzel. Solingen-born artist, Rudolf Cronau was working for the German newspaper Die Gartenlaube when he travelled to Standing Rock in North America in 1881 and lived for three weeks with the Hunkpapa. He then went to Fort Randall for a week, made several Indian drawings, and made friends with Sitting Bull whose portrait Cronau painted and gave him his own photograph. He also wrote letters to Washington for Sitting Bull.

Remains of hinging tape on back suggest this antique print might have been framed previously.  Image 13 x 20.5 cm (5 1/8 x 8 inches). Page 16.5 x 24.5 cm (6 ½ x 9 5/8 inches)
