Ladies Promenading. Robes de promenade, Costumes Parisiens, c1913

by Vallée, Armand

Promenading Outfits. 2 young ladies - one holding a billet-doux?
A charming 1913 pochoir by Armand Vallée (1884-1960) for the Journal des Dames et des Modes, Costumes Parisiens (Journal of Ladies and Fashion, Parisiens Outfits) a Parisian fashion periodical produced by couturier Paul Poiret and published by Tom Antongini from 1912 to 1914.
This is a very rare pochoir. Only 186 different fashion plates were published for the series over two years.  Designed to appeal to the elite in Paris, and similar in format to the later and larger La Gazette du Bon Ton (Gazette of Good Style), the exclusive Costumes Parisiens had an even smaller circulation. The illustration of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and this French word for stencil has been adopted worldwide to describe this work. Pochoir was a labour-intensive process, with separate stencils cut for the hand-application of successive layers of ink, gouache and watercolour.

Page size is 220 x 145mm. Image to border measures 155 x 90mm
