Robes du soir de Redfern (Evening gowns designed by the couture house established in London in 1855 by John Redfern. Redfern was appointed dressmaker to Queen victoria in 1888, and operated the Redfern house of  outure from 1881 to 1929 in London, Paris, and New York.)

This is a stunningly elegant rare double-size, hand-coloured pochoir fashion plate by George Barbier (1882-1932) published in 1919 for Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), an exclusive periodical published in Paris between 1912 and 1925 to introduce the latest fine fashion. Barbier was an eminent theatre designer and fashion illlustrator. He was the most fashion influential artist in the creation of the beautiful pochoir for this fine little publication.

The French word for stencil, pochoir, is universally used today for these fashion plates, in recognition of French mastery of this process for illustrating fashion. Creation of these pochoir was skilled labour-intensive work. Individual zinc stencils were cut, and carefully overlaid, for the addition of each layer of colour.

Approximate measurements of this double page: 24 x 38 mm (9.5 x 15 inches). Image: 16 x 31.5 mm (6.25 x 12.5 inches).
