Original pochoir published in Paris circa 1922 for Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), the exclusive publication that introduced the latest superior fashion styles. The finest illustrators of the day introduced fashions by prominent French designers in Gazette du Bon Ton, published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I).
Pochoir, the French word for stencil, was the labour-intensive method of illustration by hand-colouring with watercolour, through separately cut stencils for each consistent application of watercolour, using a variety of tools to achieve the finesse of fabric detail and nuance of colour tone.
