Pendant les Modèles. Vionnet Modelling session. Thayaht c1922.

by Thayaht

Modelling Fabric During Madame Vionnet's fashion house session.

A fashion model with the new short hair cut from the early 1920's. Original 1922 pochoir fashion plate by Thayaht for the exclusive publication La Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style).

Thayaht is the palindrome pseudonym used by futurist Italian artist and designer Ernesto Michahelles (1893-1959). Between 1919 and 1925 Thayaht worked in Paris with couturier Madeleine Vionnet. He introduced her very modern designs to the public, with beautiful hand-coloured pochoir in his distinctive style. Thayaht presented fashion very artistically within simple structured geometric lines, and intersecting swirls suggestive of energy and movement. Thayaht's pochoirs were distinctive for their dramatic simplicity. This spectacular pochoir has beautiful elegance of line and fabulous colour. It is quite unlike any other in the series.

Each pochoir (French for stencil) was hand-coloured by skilfully applied layers of watercolour through separate stencils that were cut for each colour. The French word pochoir has always been used for these beautiful fashion studies since French fashion illustrators perfected the process during the turn of the century.

As usual, there is slight age-discolouration of the page edges, but this does not detract from the stunning elegance of this beautiful Thayaht pochoir.

Size approximately 24 x 19cm or 9.5 x 7.5 inches.
