My Poor Lawn. Ma Pauvre Gazon! pochoir c1913.

by Brissaud, Pierre

Antique print of Damaged Lawn after garden party. Garden Party Dress designed by Madeleine Cheruit, and introduced to the public in this delightful pochoir c1913.

Original hand-coloured pochoir by Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964) for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Gazette of Good Style), published in Paris in 1913. The finest fashion illustrators of the day portrayed the latest fashions by prominent French designers. Brissaud was one of the four regular contributors for this exclusive periodical, and his pochoir provided charming fashion narratives of the period, with amusing captions below.

Gazette de Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I), and distributed by Condé Nast. The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and this French word for stencil has been adopted worldwide since that time. Pochoir was a labour-intensive process, with separate stencils cut for the hand-application of gouache and watercolour.
