Lassitude. Deshabillée pochoir by Georges Lepape c1922.

by Georges Lepape

Lazing around half-dressed in Guvstav Beer-designed house-gown.

Original fashion pochoir c1922 by George Lepape (1882-1932) for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style). Between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I when the editor and many of the artists were called up for military service), fine fashion illustrators introduced the latest fashions by prominent French designers. Lepape was one of the more modern stylists, who was chosen by Cond'Nast to produce the Vogue America cover in 1916.

Pochoir fashion illustration was perfected by skilful artists in France at the beginnning of the 20th century. Pochoir, the French word for stencil, has been used worldwide to describe their skill with the labour-intensive process of cutting many separate stencils and applying successive applications of watercolour by hand.

Size of page 24 x 19cm or 9.5 x 7.5 inches. (Paper slightly aged at edges.)
