In Beaulieu Garden. Beaulieu dans les Fleurs. c1920
by Bonfils, Robert
Fashionably dressed ladies in gardens... madam on balcony. (Fabulous pochoir - the only double-size vertical one.)
Manteau et Robes d'apres-midi. Fabulously modern splashes of colour in afternoon dresses and coats.
Wonderful double-size vertical pochoir fashion plate by Robert Bonfils for Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), the exclusive periodical where the latest Paris couturier's fashions were presented to the public in appropriate settings, by the premier fashion illustrators.
Published around 10 times a year between 1913 and 1925, Gazette du Bon Ton was composed of 8 to 10 individually hand-coloured pochoirs, bound in booklet form for exclusive subscription. Numerous stencils were cut for each pochoir to enable successive applications of ink and watercolour, to build up the tone and detail of fabrics and colour. The illustration of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, so 'pochoir' the French word for stencil has always been used to describe this work.
