by Benito, Edouard Garcia

Monsieur, est-il rentre? Gazette du Bon Ton pochoir.
Robe d'apres-midi en "Kasha" et "Djersador" de Rodier. Afternoon dress in Cashmere and Jersey, designed by Rodier.

Delightful original pochoir 1920's fashion plate by Edouard Garcia Benito (1891-1981) for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Gazette of Good Style), published in Paris in 1912. The finest fashion illustrators of the day introduced French designers' latest fashions in charming fashion narrative with appropriate caption below. Gazette de Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I), and distributed by Condé Nast.

The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and this French word for stencil has been adopted worldwide since that time. Pochoir was a labour-intensive process, with a separate stencil cut for each successive application of watercolour.
