La Coiffure Réparée (Fixing her hair). Fashion c1914.

by Brissaud, Pierre

Contemporary-coloured French fashion plate. Lady and otherwise-distracted males. Robe de diner. Dinner dress by Parisian designer, Georges Doeuillet.

Original Pierre Brissaud pochoir for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), published in Paris c1914 to illustrate the latest superior fashion, worn in an appropriate situation. Pochoir, the French word for stencil, was the labour-intensive method of illustration by hand-colouring with gouache and watercolour, through separate stencils for each colour. As many as 30 stencils were made for consistent colouring of each plate.

The finest illustrators of the day showed fashions by prominent French designers in Gazette du Bon Ton, published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925. Prior to photography, published fashion magazines had each illustration coloured by hand.
