L'Amour en cage. Cupid under control, caged. Pochoir c1914.

by Jan van Brock

Gazette du Bon Ton French fashion antique print. A fanciful fashion scene with a blackamoor servant holding a cage with Cupid trapped inside. Robe d'apres-midi (Afternoon Dress)

Original hand-coloured pochoir by Jan van Brock (JvB) for the Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of the Good Style) in which the finest fashion illustrators portrayed the latest fashions by French designers.

Gazette de Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925, and distributed by Condé Nast. The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and pochoir, the French word for stencil, has been adopted worldwide since that time. Pochoir was a labour-intensive process, with a separate stencil cut for each successive application of watercolour.
