by Strimpl, Louis/Ludwik

Terrace Party on the Cote d'Azur, Southern France. A really lovely rare antique print!
A few men accompany 20 ladies in exquisite evening gowns by Paris haute-couture designers c1915. The only Gazette du Bon Ton pochoir that was triple-page-size.

Original 1915 fashion pochoir by Louis Strimpl for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style). Between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I when the editor was called up for service) the finest fashion illustrators were employed by Lucien Vogel to introduce the latest French couturier designs.

The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected in France, and pochoir, the French word for stencil, has been adopted worldwide to describe the labour-intensive process used, where the outline is created by lithography and then many stencils are cut for application by hand of different shades of watercolour.

Ludwik/Ludvic Strimpl (1880-1937) was born in Austro-Hungarian Prague. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1904 he moved to Paris and joined a small community of Bohemian artists who derived a living as illustrators. He did a few single pochoirs for Gazette du Bon Ton, but they are rarely seen and more akin to his usual bright style of presentation. He exhibited a series of pastels at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts in 1909. From Paris he became a Czechoslovak Legionnaire during World War I, and was in charge of politcal service and communication for the Czech National Council in 1918 when the Czech delegation met in Geneva. Between 1922 and 1927 Strimpl was Minister Plenipotentiary (Ambassador) of Czechoslovakia in Brussels, and became Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when he returned to Prague.
