Beaulieu Gardens, and Balcony. Beaulieu dans les Fleurs. c1920

by Bonfils, Robert

Fashionably dressed ladies in gardens... madam on balcony. Manteau et Robes d'apres-midi. Afternoon dresses and coats.

The only double-size vertical pochoir fashion plate. By Robert Bonfils for Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), the exclusive periodical illustrated by premier fashion artists to introduce the latest Paris couturier's fashions to the public and show them in appropriate settings.

Published around 10 times a year between 1913 and 1925, Gazette du Bon Ton  was composed of 8 to 10 individually hand-coloured pochoirs, bound in booklet form for exclusive subscription. Numerous stencils were cut for each pochoir to enable consistent successive applications of ink and watercolour, to build up the tone and detail of fabrics and colour. The illustration of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and 'pochoir' the French word for stencil has always been used to describe this work.
