Amalfi. George Barbier pochoir. Gazette du Bon Ton c1922.

by Barbier, George

Elegantly dressed lady on the Amalfi coast. Robe, de Worth (Outfit designed by Charles Worth)

This is a beautiful original fashion pochoir c1922 by George Barbier (1882-1932) for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style). Between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I), the finest fashion illustrators introduced the latest fashions by prominent French designers. Barbier was one of the four regular contributors for this exclusive periodical - and the most influential on the style of the Gazette. George Barbier pochoirs show each new fashion within a charming fashion narrative that conveys the mood of the style beautifully.

The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and pochoir, the French word for stencil, has been adopted worldwide to describe the labour-intensive process of cutting up to 20 separate stencils for successive applications of watercolour by a variety of tools to achieve consistent detail and tone of the fabrics and colour.
