Vatican Frieze of Lady with lamp and wreath.

Vatican Frieze of Lady with lamp and wreath.

by Bartoli, Pietro Santi

17th century Vatican frieze engraving with superb mount, ready for frame choice.

Beautiful fresco of maiden with flowing robes, carrying a flaming torch and a wreath... from frescoes in Vatican Palacio Sixta, built by Pope Sixtus V in the 16th century.. (Residence of the Pope. Sundays at noon the Pope stands at the window and blesses the crowd that gathers in the Vatican square.)

Original copperplate engraving by Pietro Santi Bartoli (1635-1700), published between 1670 and 1677. Bartoli studied in Paris with eminent artists Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and Pierre Lemaire (1612-1688), and aspired to achieve the beauty and essence of Raphael’s superb classical frescos.

This engraving is particularly fine, and in excellent condition - with usual slight stretching of the paper during printing. The pristine matt has a rounded sight-edge which compliments the beauty of this classical engraving. External size of rather large matt is 390 x 360mm (15 3/8 x 14 1/8 inches) - with large mount leaving great choice of size for framing. It was previously framed, but the frame was not adequate, so all that is required is your choice of frame moulding.

Size of print is 275 x 330mm (10 7/8 x 13 inches). Image size 165 x 130mm (approx 6 1/2 x 5 1/8 inches).
