Magnificent Raphael Pilaster. Loggie nel Vaticano Pl.11 engraving c1777

by Raphael Sanzio da Urbino

Superb gouache-oloured Vatican Loggia, Raphael fresco antique print c.1777.

Raphael Vatican pilaster engravings are remarkable in size and grandeur. On the pilasters of the Vatican Loggia, Raphael and his assistants painted frescos on the walls and ceilings during 1518 and 1519, the last two years of Raphael’s life. Raphael’s finely detailed imaginative frescos simulated marble panels, classical designs and fruit and flowers linked by ribbons.

250 years after the frescos were completed, Pope Clement XIV commissioned artist Cai Savorelli, draughtsman Ludovico Teseo Taurinensis and architect Pietro Camporesi to record Raphael’s brilliant fresco designs. Their drawings were then engraved on copper-plates by Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. It was an epic production that was published in four parts between 1772 and 1776. The copperplate engravings of pilasters were luxuriantly hand-coloured with gouache, an opaque watercolour which when dry, produces the brilliant colours usually associated with oil paints. Where sections of fresco were illegible from weather damage, elements from Raphael’s Vatican tapestries were incorporated. Each tall pilaster was engraved on two large copperplates.

Five fabulous gouache-coloured copperplate engravings of Raphael frescos are currently framed, but are available unframed if preferred.

Double plate (image) size is approximately 105 x 44cm (41 x 17.25 inches).
