Beautifully framed, Cain and Abel, Raphael Loggia Arch, c1776.

by Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

Concepit Heva et Peperit Cain Fratremque Ejus Abel.. (Eve conceived Cain and his brother Abel), Genesis Chapter 4.

Garlands of fruit and flowers, and friezes with gods, graces, and mythical beasts decorate this wonderful fresco, devised by Rafaello Sanzi da Urbino (1483-1520) and painted during 1518 and 1519 - as commissioned for the Vatican Loggia. This is a fine original copperplate engraving by the eminent Italian engraver Joannes Ottaviani (1735-1808), after a drawing by draughtsman and artist Gaetano Savorelli (fl.1750-1775) and architect Petrus Camporesi, for Le Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano (The Loggia by Raphael at the Vatican). Commissioned to record the frescoes of Raphael at the Vatican, it was published in Rome between 1772 and 1776 by order of Pope Clement XIII (with later stunning gouache watercolour).

This superb arch is at the same time strikingly dramatic yet eminently elegant - with beautiful specially designed intricately-carved gilt frames. We have two 18th century Raphael Loggia arches available - in fine condition, framed identically. Image size is approximately 330 x 565 mm (13 x 22.5 inches). External measurement of the superb frame is 545 x 790 mm (21.5 x 31 inches). These pictures do not do justice to the exquisite colour and detail of these magnificent works.
