Raphael pilaster fresco engraving with superb gouache colour. 

Raphael Vatican pilaster engravings are remarkable in size and grandeur. This is a beautiful gouache-coloured copperplate engraving by Joannes Ottaviano after the drawing by Cai Savorelli, draughtsman Ludovico Teseo Taurinensis and architect Petrus Camporesi, depicting fresco decoration by Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520), of a pilaster of the Loggia to the Pope's private residence at the Vatican. Published in Rome between 1772 and 1776 for Delle Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano (The Loggia by Raphael at the Vatican).This is a rare and important record of Raphael’s magnificent work.

Published on two large copperplate-engraved plates that were then joined, as the image was too large for one plate to show the magnitude of each elaborate pilaster (pillar). Each pair of plates was then painted with stunning gouache (similating oil painting).

As you can imagine, the picture does not do justice to this grand pilaster fresco. The old-style of gilt frame suits it beautifully.
