Bacchante classical engraving of a young woman with infant and grapes c1792. In classical mythology, Bacchante is a priestess, or female follower of Bacchus, the God of wine.
Third in group of three delightful 18th century engravings of Bacchante. Original stipple engraving circa 1792 by M. Bovi, from a drawing by Lavinia, Countess of Spencer. The engraver Marino Bovi was a pupil of the Italian artist, Francesco Bartolozzi R.A. (1727-1815).
Size to plate mark is 22 x 28cm (8.5 x 11 inches), with wide borders. Because of the fragile nature of the paper used for the engraving, it was laid down (adhered to a stronger archival backing paper).
