Heraldry. Scarborough Coat of Arms antique print. Catton c1790

by Catton, Charles/Chesham

Scarborough, Coat of Arms with Parrots, engraved c1790. Motto  “Murus aeneus conscientia sana” (A sound conscience is a wall of brass).

Original copperplate engraving by draughtsman, etcher, line and aquatint engraver Francis Chesham (1749-1806) from a drawing by Charles Catton (1756-1819) for “The English Peerage" published in London circa 1790. The fine later hand-colour certainly adds to the appeal of this small engraving on 18th century hand-made paper.

Published on hand-laid paper from the period, this small coat of arms was printed on half a page (with another that was engraved on the same plate).

Mounted in conservation board, and cellophaned for protection. Image within window is 11cm x 17cm (4.25 x 6.75 inches) - approximate measurements.
