Hawkesbury coat of arms. Motto: free of dust.

by Catton, Charles/Chesham

Eagles on the Hawkesbury coat of arms c1836. Motto, Palma non sine pulvere (Shall be Free of Dust.)

Original copperplate engraving by draughtsman, etcher, line and aquatint engraver Francis Chesham (1749-1806) from a drawing by Charles Catton (1756-1819) for The English Peerage published in London circa 1790 (later hand-colour).

This series of coats of arms were published two to a page, one above the other. It was printed on hand-laid paper but is now only a half page. The hand-colour certainly adds to the appeal of this wonderful image.

It is mounted between antique-white ragmat conservation board, and cellophaned for protection until framed. Image within window measures 110 mm x 175 mm (approximately 4.25 x 7 inches). External measurement for frame is 240 x 305 mm (9 1/2 x 12 inches).
